A recent study by the Local Government Association found that almost half a million homes which had been granted planning permission are yet to be built.
The Local Government Association stated that ‘this proves that the planning system is not a barrier to house building’. The study identifies skills shortage as the biggest barrier to house building.
Between 2014 and 2015 there were a record number of planning permissions granted. 212,468 applications were approved, which equates to 90% of all submissions.
The Home Builders Federation were quick to respond to the LGA study. "Speeding up the rate at which permissions are granted – i.e. the move from ‘granted’ to ‘implementable’- is one of the keys to significant, sustainable increases in house building. Too many sites are stuck in the planning system, with an estimated 150,000 plots awaiting full sign off by local authorities."
